What odds really tell you
Odds are not just a multiplier: they are a probability, to which the bookmaker adds its margin.
Decimal odds of 2.00 mean the bookmaker rates the event at about a 50% chance: the implied probability is 1 divided by the odds.
Enter odds and a stake to see the potential return, the implied probability and what you lose if the bet fails.
The bookmaker's margin
Take a match priced 1.85 / 3.40 / 4.20. The implied probabilities are 54%, 29% and 24%, which is 107% in total. The 7% above 100% is the operator's margin: it guarantees a profit across all bettors.
Why you can't beat the bookmaker over time
Because of this margin, every bet has a negative expected value for the bettor on average. Over the long run, the vast majority of players lose money. Betting should remain a hobby with a budget set in advance.
Comparing odds
For the same match, operators do not offer exactly the same odds. Choosing the site with the lowest margin reduces your average losses, without removing them. See the comparison.
